Third, the idea that buying a "genuine" brand protects you assumes the seller is genuine too. That trust model worked before online marketplaces made it cheap to print convincing boxes. The badge on the outside isn't verification. The measurements on the inside are.

And to be fair: not every counterfeit filter is an instant hazard. Some are just mediocre, and a mediocre filter might run okay for a while.
