You're probably not looking for a philosophy lesson. You have an actual car problem: a transmission that shudders, a differential that moans in tight turns, a no-charge condition after an LS swap, or a check-engine light that keeps pointing at a catalytic converter. You want to know which part will make it stop.
I understand that instinct. I'm in quality and brand compliance for ACDelco products. That means I sit between product specifications and warranty returns. Every month I review a few hundred line items before they're approved. A surprising number of those 'defective' parts are not defective at all. In Q1 2024, I rejected about 18% of first-time warranty claims because the returned part tested in spec. The real problem was something else.
The deeper issue isn't laziness. It's that replacing a part gives us a satisfying physical action. Checking a fluid spec or tracing a wire doesn't.

One example sticks with me: a GM vehicle with a shudder diagnosis. It had already received a new valve body and solenoids. When I looked at the service record, the last fluid service used a multi-vehicle ATF. The bottle claimed many approvals, but not the exact GM spec required by that transmission. The car got better only after a proper flush and fill with the correct specification fluid.
If your manual specifies Dexron VI, choose an ACDelco automatic transmission fluid that carries Dexron VI approval. If the manual calls for something else, follow that. The point is to match the spec exactly and not assume that 'ATF' is a single thing.

GM's Positraction rear axles use clutch packs inside a limited-slip differential. Those clutches rely on a friction modifier that is part of the proper axle lubricant. When the modifier is missing, the axle usually acts normal straight but grumbles and chatters in tight turns.
I've seen that noise turn into a differential rebuild that didn't yet need to happen. Once I inspected a carrier that was fine, but the clutch discs had been scored by the wrong gear oil. That was a fluid-and-maintenance problem that became a hardware problem because it was treated as a hardware-only diagnosis.
Product language doesn't make this easier. If you search for 'posi traction differential kit', you may find a small bottle of additive or a full clutch-and-shim kit. Those do not solve the same problem. An ACDelco differential fluid that matches your axle spec and includes the required modifier can fix chatter if it is a lubricant issue. If the symptom continues, or the noise turns metallic under load, the clutch pack or bearings need to be inspected separately.

Dead battery diagnoses make up a large slice of return claims. A customer brings a vehicle to a shop with a no-charge condition. The shop replaces the alternator. The car returns in a week with the battery dead again. On the test bench, the old alternator works perfectly.
The problem, especially on LS engine swaps, is almost never visual. A GM alternator usually needs a switched voltage at the connector before the internal regulator starts working. On a car that was swapped into another chassis, that small terminal can be left unconnected, wired to the wrong key-on source, or lost when the old harness was cut.
When I review these returns, I keep a wiring diagram open. I don't know every LS generation's pinout from memory, and I wouldn't trust anyone who claims to. The correct move is to verify power at the alternator connector with the key on. That is part of the phrase 'LS alternator wiring': it's a small circuit, but it controls the largest electrical habit the car has.

The first part of this question is physical. The catalytic converter is located between the engine's exhaust manifold and the muffler. In many front-drive cars, that means under the engine bay or just beneath the front floor. On rear-drive trucks, it can sit under the cab. Some engines have more than one converter.
The second part matters more. If a scan tool says P0420, that's a catalyst efficiency code. It doesn't tell you the converter is the root cause. It tells you a catalyst is not cleaning emissions as efficiently as the downstream oxygen sensor expects. An engine that misfires, burns oil, runs too rich, or leaks exhaust before the converter can make any converter look exhausted.
So where is a catalytic converter located in a car is a good starting place, but not a substitute for checking upstream engine data. Seeing the converter does not tell you why it failed.
The Real Cost of Ordering the Part Before Finding the Cause
When I process warranty returns, I see the same math from the other side. A wrong part is returned, tested, and credited. But the customer has paid for labor on the wrong part, waited for shipping, and lost time. If the old part was healthy, the original concern still waits for a diagnosis. If it was unhealthy, the replacement part may fail too because the cause hasn't changed.
I've watched a shop owner make that choice under pressure. The customer needed the car by the end of the day. 'We'll try the alternator, and if this doesn't fix it, we'll trace the wiring next time.' I understood the decision. The next appointment still showed up.
Looking back, I've made similar calls. If I could redo one early warranty review, I'd have asked for an axle code before approving a differential teardown. It seemed easier to look at the physical part first. In hindsight, opening the repair order should have come before opening the differential.
What I'd Actually Do If the Car Were Mine
I'd skip the 'try a part' method. Not because it never works, but because it turns a one-hour diagnosis into a multi-week parts lottery.
- Confirm the fluid spec first. If a GM transmission calls for Dexron VI, choose an ACDelco automatic transmission fluid labeled for Dexron VI. If the differential's spec calls for a limited-slip lubricant or friction modifier, use an ACDelco differential fluid or equivalent that includes that modifier.
- Ask what 'posi traction differential kit' means in your context. A friction-modifier additive kit and a clutch/rebuild kit are not interchangeable. The symptom and the maintenance history will tell you which one you need.
- Check the circuit before the alternator. For an LS swap, trace the alternator connector and verify switched power from the ignition circuit. A no-charge condition rooted in LS alternator wiring cannot be fixed with another alternator.
- Find the converter, then look upstream. On most vehicles, the catalytic converter is located between the engine and muffler under the car. Before replacing it after P0420, check for misfires, fuel trims, oil consumption, and exhaust leaks. The new converter will inherit every problem you don't fix.
This approach is less emotionally satisfying than buying a shiny part. But quality control exists for the same reason the ACDelco fluids and components have to meet a spec: because small differences in what you put in a car today determine whether you're doing the job again next month.
