ACDelco Parts Install Checklist: Silver 18A2947A Rotors, Iridium Spark Plugs, Brake Caliper Car Applications, Radiators, and How to Clean Water Pump Surfaces

I still use this checklist as of January 2025. I have been handling ACDelco parts for fleet brake and cooling jobs for about seven years, and I am not a master technician. I am the guy who orders the parts, checks them against the old parts, and helps with the install. I have made enough expensive mistakes to know what actually matters.

One that still stings: I ordered the ACDelco Silver 18A2947A rear disc brake rotor for a customer without checking the box when it arrived. The invoice number was right. The box number was wrong. The center bore did not fit, and the job sat on the lift for a week while we sorted out a return. That mistake cost roughly $450 in shipping and lost time.

I do not have hard data on how many part failures come from install mistakes, but based on my own work and the shop gossip I trust, I would guess it is more than half. This is the checklist I use now. It will not turn you into a master technician, but it will keep you from repeating the dumb stuff I already did.

Who This Checklist Is For

Use this if you are installing a replacement rotor, spark plug, brake caliper, radiator, or if you are cleaning a water pump for the first time. It is a practical list, not a factory service manual. You still need to look up torque specs for your exact vehicle, but these are the steps I wish someone had handed me on day one.

There are six main steps. The first few stop you from putting the wrong part on the car. The final one is the step everyone skips.

Step 1: Verify the Part Number on the Part, Not Just the Invoice

This sounds obvious. What I mean is: open the box and look at the part itself, not just the box label or invoice. I have seen an invoice say ACDelco Silver 18A2947A rear disc brake rotor and a box on the shelf say something slightly different. Distributors sometimes slap labels over labels.

On a brake rotor, the part number is usually stamped on the hat. On a spark plug, it is printed on the shell or the box. If the part number does not match what you ordered, stop. ACDelco Silver is a product line, not a universal fit. The same goes for the ACDelco Iridium Spark Plug: there are multiple iridium plugs with different reach, thread size, and heat range. If you are doing a fleet order with ten part numbers on a pallet, this is a no-brainer, but it gets skipped when you are in a hurry.

Step 2: Measure the Rotor Before You Mount It

New does not mean perfect. For any new rotor, including the ACDelco Silver 18A2947A rear disc brake rotor, check actual thickness and the minimum thickness spec. You need a micrometer, not a ruler. Compare the new rotor with the old one before mounting. If the new rotor is thinner than the old worn rotor, that is a red flag. It might be the wrong rotor or a light-duty version.

Check the center bore and lug holes before sliding it on the hub. If it does not fit without force, do not force it. I have seen someone sand a center bore to make a rotor fit. That does not fix runout; it just creates a vibration you will feel in the steering wheel. The hub and rotor mounting surface need to be clean as well. Brush away light rust with a wire brush, but do not sand or grind the friction surface.

Step 3: Do Not Assume Every Iridium Spark Plug Is Pre-Gapped Correctly

The ACDelco Iridium Spark Plug is popular because iridium lasts a long time and fires cleanly. But iridium is just the electrode material. The gap still has to match your engine. Most plugs come from the factory with a gap, but factory gap is not the same as your vehicle's specified gap.

Check the gap with a wire-style gap tool before install. If the gap needs adjusting, bend the ground electrode, not the center electrode. And if you drop a spark plug, do not install it. The insulator can crack internally even if the outside looks perfect. Also, do not put anti-seize on the plug threads unless the vehicle manufacturer calls for it. Many modern plugs are coated, and extra lubrication can change the torque reading.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Caliper Like It Is the Only Thing Between You and a Ditch

When someone asks me for a brake caliper car application, I ask for the year, model, engine, and brake package. There are too many piston sizes and bracket designs to guess. The caliper might look the same from the outside but have a different pad abutment, piston diameter, or hose thread.

Before installing a caliper, check the piston boot, bleeder screw, and mounting threads. If the bleeder is damaged or cross-threaded, send it back. If the caliper comes without a bracket, do not reuse the old bracket unless the slide pins move freely. Use new copper washers for the banjo bolt. For brake caliper car jobs, the banjo bolt and bracket bolts are where comebacks are born. Use new brake fluid from a sealed container. Brake fluid is cheap; a soft pedal is not.

Step 5: Flush the Cooling System Before You Drop in a Radiator

A new radiator can fail early, but it is not always the radiator. If the system has old coolant sludge, rust, or stop-leak, the new radiator inherits that mess. Flush the engine block and heater core before you install the new radiator.

Inspect the radiator for shipping damage before the install. Bent fins can be straightened carefully, but a punctured core is a return. If you are keeping the old radiator cap, test it or replace it. A weak cap lets coolant boil, and then the system looks like a radiator problem when it is really a pressure problem. Use the coolant type specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Mixing incompatible coolant can turn a new radiator into a clogged one.

Step 6: How to Clean Water Pump Mating Surfaces Without Causing a Leak

This is the step I skipped for years. I would scrape the old gasket until it looked close enough, bolt the new pump on, and then get a leak from the bottom edge. I blamed the pump. The pump was fine. The mating surface was not clean.

Here is how to clean water pump flanges the right way:

  • Use a plastic scraper first. Do not use metal on aluminum covers or blocks, because scratches turn into leak paths.
  • Spray gasket remover or brake cleaner and let it soak. This softens old gasket material without heavy scraping.
  • Use a coarse scotch-brite pad to remove the leftover film. Work in one direction instead of circles.
  • Clean the bolt holes. Coolant and old gasket material hide in the threads, and that can make bolts feel tight when they are actually bottoming out early.
  • Wipe the surface one last time with a lint-free cloth and brake cleaner before installation.

I have mixed feelings about how much sealant to use on a water pump. On one hand, most modern pumps use a formed gasket and do not need extra sealant. On the other hand, a slightly scratched surface can seep even with a new gasket. Follow the pump manufacturer's procedure. If you do not know the torque spec for the water pump bolts, stop and look it up before you tighten anything. And if the pump has a weep hole, do not plug it. It is there to tell you when the seal is leaking.

Final Notes: Common Mistakes I Still See

Torque is the biggest one. Caliper bracket bolts, water pump bolts, spark plugs, and banjo bolts all have torque specs. Guessing tight enough is how threads strip and gaskets squeeze out. It takes one minute to check the spec.

Another mistake is reusing old hardware. A caliper bracket bolt from an old kit might thread in, but the length, thread pitch, and grade might be wrong for the new bracket. If the part came with new hardware, use it. If it did not, buy the right kit.

Do not be afraid to send a part back while it is still in the box. Returning the ACDelco Silver 18A2947A rotor is annoying, but it beats explaining why you installed a wrong-size rotor and then watched it wear unevenly. The same is true for a damaged radiator.

I should add: I do not have an exact count of how many comebacks this checklist has saved. I can say that after I started using it, my rework time dropped by a lot. That is good enough for me.

Bottom line: verify before install, clean before assembly, and torque before you call the job done.
