Three Mistakes I Keep Finding on Parts Orders
Six years ago, I moved from plant floor purchasing into the maintenance budget seat. I'm the procurement manager at a 140-person automotive metal-forming supplier, and I manage roughly $70,000 a year in repair and replacement parts for plant vehicles and shop support equipment. What I have learned can be summed up in one sentence: the second repair is almost always more expensive than the first one. This checklist is for anyone who approves orders for an ACDelco platinum spark plug, an ACDelco D510C ignition coil, or a Ford Focus control arm. It has five steps, and step four is the one most people skip.
Step 1: Name the symptom before you name the part
Let's say a work vehicle has a DTC for a cylinder misfire. A technician points to an ACDelco D510C ignition coil and asks me to approve it. I want to know why that DTC exists before I type the part number. A code tells us which cylinder missed, not why it missed. The coil may be fine. The spark plug may be worn. The boot may have moisture in it. The wiring to the coil may have voltage drop. Or the engine may have a mechanical problem that no ignition part can fix.
The same logic applies when a Ford Focus control arm is on the invoice. A clunk over speed bumps can be a lower control arm bushing, a ball joint, or loose hardware. If the diagnosis is 'probably the control arm,' I treat it as a guess. If a shop shows me play in the bushing or ball joint while the suspension is loaded, that's enough evidence.
Can a Dirty Air Filter Cause AC Not to Cool?
This question kind of comes out of left field when you're looking at an ignition parts quote, but it belongs here because it is a diagnosis trap. The way I see it, a dirty engine air filter won't make the AC stop cooling. The engine air filter can restrict airflow, disturb fuel trims, and reduce performance, but it doesn't switch off the compressor or warm up the evaporator. A dirty cabin air filter is a different story: it can make vent airflow weak, which makes the AC feel less cool even when the air coming off the evaporator is cold.
So if someone tells you the reason the AC isn't cold is the engine air filter, ask for the cabin air filter and the vent temp reading first. There is no reason to replace an ACDelco D510C ignition coil or pay for an AC diagnosis until you know which system is causing the symptom. That kind of clarification has saved our budget more than once.
Step 2: Verify the exact part number and cross-reference
ACDelco is a common spec on our orders because the catalog is broad and the engineering link to GM is straightforward. But a brand name alone isn't a fitment answer. The correct ACDelco platinum spark plug has to be matched to engine family, VIN, and sometimes build date. The same is true for an ACDelco D510C ignition coil: if the catalog says D510C, I still cross-reference the OEM number and look at the connector design. Coil-on-plug assemblies from different engine families look similar. One wrong locking tab can turn a thirty-minute replacement into a whole afternoon.
Back in 2023, I approved a coil because the listing photo matched the old unit. The box said D510C, but the connector didn't line up with the harness. I'm not 100% sure whether that was a harness revision or an older part design, but the fitment was wrong either way. Now every parts quote in our system has a VIN lookup attached before I see it.
If a supplier calls something 'OE-grade' or 'direct replacement,' I want the basis for that claim. Per FTC guidance (ftc.gov), claims about quality and performance should be truthful and substantiated. I don't need legal language. I need a supplier who can say which OE spec the part is designed to meet.
Step 3: Price the total cost, not the box price
A box price is only one line. My cost sheet includes: part, freight, downtime, technician labor, alignment, fasteners, and the cost of a second repair if the first part is wrong.
This is where a Ford Focus control arm replacement gets tricky. The arm itself might be the main part, but if the old hardware is seized, the quote may need new bolts and an alignment. If the shop doesn't mention alignment, ask why. The same thinking applies to ignition parts. A less expensive online ACDelco D510C ignition coil with a seven-day wait and no pre-paid warranty replacement is not cheaper when a vehicle is down. A local jobber's higher list price may include faster delivery and simpler returns. The invoice line I never ignore is 'comeback labor.' Even after choosing the faster local supplier, I kept second-guessing. What if I had left money on the table? I didn't relax until the vehicle came back with a clean scan and no further misfires.
Step 4: Check compression before you buy more ignition parts
This is the step most people skip, and I understand why. After a coil and plug replacement, the natural assumption is that the parts were bad. If the misfire comes back, stop and check for mechanical causes. With the plugs out, do a compression test or leak-down test.
The phrase 'piston ring land' shows up when a mechanical misfire is ignored. A piston ring land is the machined step that holds a piston ring. If it cracks, the ring may not seal properly. The result is low compression, high blow-by, or oil consumption that finally turns into a flashing check engine light. No ACDelco platinum spark plug and no ACDelco D510C ignition coil will fix a broken piston ring land. The fix is engine work, and that has a completely different cost structure.
I'm not 100% sure of the exact compression threshold for every engine, and altitude and gauge design matter. But a cylinder that reads noticeably lower than the others is enough to pause a parts order. A leak-down test will then show where the pressure is going: past the rings, out the exhaust valve, or into the cooling system.
The surprise wasn't that the second coil failed. It was that the first coil was probably working fine. We had already ordered one before anyone checked compression, so the second ignition part was a symptom of our process, not the engine.
Step 5: Decide the return and warranty path before you pay
At this point I know the symptom, the verification, the TCO, and the compression results. The last step is paperwork. Ask: Will the supplier send a warranty replacement before receiving the old part? Who pays return shipping? Is there a restocking fee if the diagnosis changes after the part is delivered? If the part is installed and doesn't fix the issue, is it returnable?
Those answers matter more than the difference between two brands. I'm not saying every part purchased from the cheapest online seller is risky. I am saying the risk needs to be priced into the decision.
Three Mistakes I Keep Finding on Parts Orders
First, ordering by code alone. A P0301 code doesn't tell you the coil is bad. Code plus test data is a diagnosis; code plus guess is a gamble.
Second, skipping mechanical checks. If compression, leak-down, and fuel trims are not part of the conversation, piston ring land damage can hide behind multiple ignition part replacements.
Third, confusing the cabin air filter with the engine air filter when an AC complaint comes in. A dirty cabin filter can reduce airflow and make the AC feel weak. A dirty engine air filter does not normally stop the AC from cooling.
If you take one thing from this checklist, make it a rule: before you approve any ACDelco platinum spark plug, ACDelco D510C ignition coil, or Ford Focus control arm repair, make the estimate show the symptom, the test that confirmed it, the exact part number, and the total cost. That four-line rule has saved us more than any single discount ever could.
