The alternator that started it all

What I didn't check: whether that Edge had the towing package. Ford used a higher-output alternator on towing package cars. The lesson wasn't "check the part number." It was: check the vehicle configuration, not just the vehicle. The alternator looked right. The trim was right. The options package wasn't.
I've seen the same pattern with Mercedes alternator orders. A W204 and a W212 can both be 3.5L V6s, but the charging systems are controlled differently—some use LIN communication, some use a simpler discrete input. I want to say we've fielded at least four alternator returns where the buyer matched brand and engine family but ignored the chassis code. The part was fine. The check was missing.
CVT fluid: "it's basically the same" is the most expensive sentence
If the alternator taught me about vehicle configuration, the CVT incident taught me about specifications.
In September 2022, a customer asked about a transmission fluid service for his GM vehicle with a CVT. When he saw the price of ACDelco CVT transmission fluid, he asked, "Can't I just use the generic stuff? It's basically the same, right?"

CVT fluid is not conventional automatic transmission fluid. It's engineered with specific frictional properties for the belt-and-pulley system. When the OEM specifies a particular fluid standard, that spec is tied to the transmission's clutch and friction material qualification testing—it's not a marketing suggestion. Three weeks later, he came back with a shudder on acceleration.
We flushed the transmission and refilled it with the correct fluid. $280 for the flush, plus a $600 diagnostic and service check. And that was the good outcome. If the wrong fluid had caused valve body damage, we'd be quoting a $3,500 replacement instead. The $40 he saved on fluid ended up costing over $800. I don't say "it's basically the same" anymore.

Simple answer: it measures the oxygen left in the exhaust stream, and the engine computer uses that signal to adjust the air-fuel ratio. It's the primary feedback loop for fuel control. When the sensor reads outside the expected range, the computer sets a code and switches to a default fuel strategy. That's why a failing sensor hurts fuel economy and driveability.
But here's the lesson I learned the hard way—the oxygen sensor is often a messenger, not the criminal. I once replaced one because the code said "slow response." The light came back. The real issue was a shorted wire in the harness. The sensor had been doing exactly what it was designed to do: telling us something was wrong.
