  • Metal forming range—can they handle stamping, forging, and aluminum extrusions under one roof? That was a deciding factor for us when we consolidated suppliers in Q2 2024.
  • CNC machining capability—especially for parts that need post-stamping precision work. Not all stamping shops have this, and having it can eliminate secondary logistics costs.

Checkpoint: Ask for photos of their shop floor and die maintenance records. If a vendor hesitates to share what they physically control, that's a signal.

Step 2: Request a Total Cost Breakdown, Not Just a Unit Price Quote

  • Inspection and certification—some vendors charge extra for PPAP submissions or material certificates. That should be explicit.

Real talk: if a vendor can't or won't give you a TCO breakdown, they're probably still thinking in commodity terms. That's fine for simple parts, but not for complex stamping in car manufacturing.

Step 3: Audit the Die & Mold Makers' Revision History (The Step Most People Skip)

People think expensive die makers deliver better quality. Actually, die makers who deliver quality can charge more. The causation runs the other way. What you really want to know is how often they re-cut or rework a die after the first tryout.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: every automotive mold maker has a 'first article approval rate' internally. They don't publish it. But if you ask a sales engineer directly—'How many of your dies pass validation on the first run?—the good ones will give you a number. The mediocre ones will change the subject.

In my experience comparing 8 vendors over 3 months, the highest quote came from a shop that had an 88% first-pass approval rate. The lowest quote had maybe 60%. That 28% difference showed up in revision fees, delayed timelines, and scrapped prototypes. The math was obvious after that.

Step 4: Align on Communication Cadence from the Start

  • Set expectations upfront: 'I need a status update every Thursday by 2 PM.'

  • If they're a small automotive mold maker, check who your single point of contact is. If it's the salesperson who sold you, that's a red flag—you want the project manager or engineer.

Step 5: Build a Multi-Vendor Backup Plan (Even If You Have a Preferred Partner)

2. Assuming 'one-stop shop' means everything is made in-house. It probably doesn't. Verify what's physically under their roof.
